A community of citizens – Venice

Venice had neither heroes nor natural resources. Founded in a swamp by refugees fleeing Attila. But over a thousand years they built a capital that few others could match: Citizenship and Solidarity.

The city became Europe’s foremost merchant center, the meeting place for all trade routes. When you have no resources, the resources come to you. The city teemed with individual enterprises, wealth, and beauty. But no citizen was more important than the city itself. No trade agreement was stronger than the city’s best. And no foreign power was to conquer the fairy-tale city that floated on water. What organization wouldn’t want such a competitive advantage? Forget motivation theories and reward systems! The strongest motivator is linked to social identity and citizenship. The non-fiction literature is overflowing with articles on the subject. In our fleeting, liberated time, all organizations crave this. And people long for it too. We miss a community.
