Churchill and strategic choices – London

“Don’t ask for easier times, don’t ask for easier answers. We are facing one of the darkest chapters in human history. I have nothing to offer but blood, sweat, toil and tears.”

This is how Winston Churchill marked his entrance as Prime Minister in an England ravaged by the coming World War. Not many can match Churchill when it comes to strategic understanding, foolhardy ingenuity, capricious stubbornness and victorious leadership. He said so himself. He felt that he was meant for this very task in life.

We are going to London and following in his footsteps. Churchill and his cabinet operate in a more complicated landscape than most of us will ever experience. Their choices have monumental consequences. Rarely are strategic choices and assessments exposed in such a way. Here there are no definitive answers, only assessments and games of chance. Rarely do we see the psychology and uncertainty of decisions so clearly. And some choices carry heavy burdens.

In these key historical events, there is something for all leaders to learn. We use history and modern professional perspectives to illuminate the participants’ own strategic challenges. There is a similarity between what Churchill fought against and what all leadership groups struggle with. Through this, the outcome is enlightening and useful, and we connect it with visits to relevant modern organizations and their strategic dilemmas. It is a unique combination of strategy and psychology.
