Renaissance leadership – Florence

FOR A THOUSAND YEARS EUROPE HAS MADE HASTE SLOWLY. VOICES CAN BE HEARD WHISPERING: THE DARK AGES. BUT THEN SOMETHING HAPPENS. IN ITALY, BUT ABOVE ALL, IN FLORENCE. SPRING IS SPRUNG WITH AN UNPARALLELED BANG. THE AGE OF CHANGE IS NOT NOW, IT WAS THEN! WE RECOGNIZE THE NAMES: LEONARDO, MICHELANGELO, BOTTICELLI. DO YOU THINK IT’S A COINCIDENCE THAT ALL THESE INDIVIDUALS LIVED WITHIN A BRIEF TIME PERIOD IN FLORENCE? IF SO, THE CITY HAS NOTHING TO TEACH YOU. BUT IF IT’S NOT A COINCIDENCE...?

Over the course of two-three generations, things happen here that change Europe and have ramifications that continue to resonate in our own times – and not just in the arts. Paradigm shifts occur in fields as diverse as philosophy, political science, architecture, management and economics. Niccolò Machiavelli writes a book that terrifies the leaders of his day and lays the foundation for realpolitik. Marsilio Ficino invests everything in the goodness of mankind and creates the cradle of humanism in Florence. Filippo Brunelleschi builds a cupola at the Florence Cathedral which revolutionizes the art of building. And everything happens abruptly and quickly.

The Renaissance is about growth. About development, about diversity, innovations and not least, reflections on power and the dark sides of power. Human achievement is a duty. Life requires us to address it. Self-realization is brought about by mining our best qualities.

Power and dignity in Florence. Could such a large group – from such a wide range of fields – take anything relevant away from such a course? YES – YES – YES … without question, as it turned out ... it was an educational journey through science, art, politics and social development in the Florence of the Renaissance about which everyone – absolutely everyone – was enthusiastic and from which everyone reaped great professional dividends.
